7. Outlook

Considerable improvement has been made in tribological high pressure systems in the past. From the automobile industry with high pressure fuel injection systems, to the application of field water jet cleaning, water jet cutting and sterilizing, modern carbide components for high pressure applications are now used more extensively than ever. Cemented carbide with corrosion-resistant binding systems which use nickel and chromium are standard for such applications. New types of sealing systems in pumps, using cemented carbide seal faces have proven very successful in increasing the running life of these components. Thin low friction coatings have been used on cemented carbide seal faces and have proven to give outstanding results whilst offering protection from corrosive elements within the pumped media. With regard to hyper compressors such coatings can offer an element of safety should faults in the lubrication system take place. Coating plants, even for dimensions and weights of large plungers for the LDPE-industry are available and usable.
